Fountain To Flow With Beer For 10th Anniversary Of Bendigo On The Hop

In a move that can only be described as “divinely inspired” (and legally questionable), the City of Greater Bendigo has announced that the iconic Alexandra Fountain will temporarily turn water into beer next weekend to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Bendigo On The Hop.

The fountain, a staple of Bendigo’s cultural heritage, is expected to attract thousands of beer enthusiasts, curious locals, and the occasional stray dog with a refined palate.

The council insists that the beer will be “organic” and “artisanal,” presumably making it safe for public consumption—or at least safer than whatever usually floats in the fountain.

The transformation will finally give the fountain some purpose beyond being a glorified birdbath.

The decision to modify the fountain’s output was not without controversy. “We’re worried that birds might get drunk and start acting aggressive,” said the Bendigo Animal Defense League spokesperson Dawn O’Leary. “Last thing we need is a bunch of inebriated birds causing havoc in Rosalind Park.”

However, the city council has assured the public that steps have been taken to mitigate such risks. “Bird Sobriety Stations” will be set up around the fountain, featuring pools of plain water where the birds can sober up. Additionally, council volunteers will be on standby to gently guide any inebriated animals back to their nests or to provide them with tiny, bird-sized AA pamphlets.

The fountain-to-beer conversion will begin with an official toast led by the Mayor. After the event, any leftover beer will be donated to local bars and pubs—or left in the fountain for the ducks, because why not?
