Bendigo Resident Mildred Hussy Turns 200

Born in Castlemaine in 1822, The great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandmother became Bendigo’s first Bicentennial.

Not everyone can brag about having two letters from the queen but Mildred Hussy can.

Mildred’s friends and family enjoyed a barbie out the back of her granny flat. Golden Square fire brigade was on standby to assist with extinguishing the candles.

Mrs Hussy told The Bendigo Standard “Every day I’m waiting around for the good Lord to take me but he’s too busy giving the Kardashians everything they want. I think He’s taking the piss”.

Mayor Andrea Metcalf congratulated Mildred on an incredible achievement “Happy birthday! Wishing you many more years of good health, overwhelming happiness, amazing grace and perfect peace of mind. Happy 200th birthday!”

On a personal front, she married her love, Walter, in 1852. They were married for 42 years and had four sons and ten daughters.

“I was best friends with Rod Fyffe’s great grandparents Bruce and Ethel. I had a bit of a crush on him.”

When asked what the secret was to living a long life, Mildred said good genes, bacon and bingo have contributed to her longevity.

Mildred’s friends and family said she doesn’t look a day over one hundred.

“I’ve seen and done everything. And I mean everything. Geez, I’m old.”
